Simion Astilean is currently professor at the Faculty of Physics and director of Nanobiophotonics and Laser Microspectroscopy Center at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on BioNanoScience at Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
He received the doctoral degree in physics from Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France, in 1993. His current research is focused on the fabrication of multifunctional nano-platforms based on plasmonic nanoparticles conjugated with (bio)polymers, graphene, proteins for applications in theranostics, cell imaging, drug-delivery, biosensing, and development of targeted fluorescent imaging nanoprobes for near-infrared (NIR) real-time image-guided surgery of ovarian cancer. He published over 220 papers in the area of plasmonics, nanobiophotonics and heathcare nanomaterials.
