Nicolae Leopold’s research activity is focused on biophotonics, in optical sensing techniques in biophotonics and interaction behaviour of materials (adsorption, chimisorption processes) by optical spectroscopic methods.
He developed his research in new sensors for heavy metals detection, new online detection for capillary electrophoresis and liquid chromatography using ultrasensitive Raman spectroscopy – SERS, and new approaches in the detection of chemical residues in complex matrices using the TLC-SERS coupling (detection of melamine, antibiotics and pesticides in milk and milk powder) through several national research projects.
As a visiting researcher (Würzburg University, Technical University of Viena) and a postdoctoral researcher (Tübingen University, UE Marie Curie-Technical University of Viena) he developed research studies in the field on optical molecular spectroscopy, analytical applications of optical molecular spectroscopy, optical molecular sensors, and molecular separation.
His research results were published in prestigious journals (146 papers), in books and chapters in books.
