Dr. rer. nat. Dipl. Ing. Tzounis Lazaros is an Associate Professor at the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) in Heraklion Crete, at the Mechanical Engineering Department, with a specific focus on advanced 2D and 3D additive manufacturing (AM) technologies utilising functional nanomaterials for emerging applications i.e. in energy, aeronautics, automotive, electronics, etc. sectors

In 2010, he received a Diploma of Materials Science & Engineering from the Univ. of Ioannina, Greece with honours. He moved then to Germany to conduct his PhD at the Technical University of Dresden, working most of the time at the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research Dresden (IPF Institute) in the Physical Chemistry of Polymeric Materials- Nanostructured Materials Department. His PhD entitled: “Glass and Jute fibers modified with CNT-based functional coatings for high performance composites” was completed in 2014.

His main interests involve i) the processing, fabrication & synthesis of Polymeric materials filled with different kinds of Carbon allotropes (CNTs, graphene, fullerenes, etc.) and other nanoadditives by extrusion processes & solution mixing , ii) Novel thermoelectrics and printed TEG devices, as well as printed flexible PV technologies (OPVs, PePVs), iii) 2D and 3D printing additive manufacturing (AM) processes towards printed and/or flexible electronics (2D: slot-die, gravure, ink-jet, flexo) and 3D printed multi-functional polymer materials (via FFF & SLA), iv) Manufacturing of advanced fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites & prepregs with smart functionalities (actuation, sensing, energy harvesting) for the Transport (aeronautics, automotive, naval) & Energy (wind turbines) sectors, v) Custom machinery design & development i.e Roll-to-Roll printing/ coating machinery, vii) Chemistry of Carbon nanomaterials (CNTs, Graphene, Fullerenes) and synthesis of different functional nano-colloids and inks with electronic, optical, antimicrobial properties, etc.

Dr. Lazaros Tzounis has written and attracted >2.0M€ from EU, national and industrially oriented competitive projects, while having coordinated activities in H2020 & National research projects, as well as other competitive scientific and industrially driven proposals. He is the author >90 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals with more than 3,000 citations, while he has participated in more than 100 conferences with invited talks, posters and oral presentations.
