Dr. Ionut Topala holds a permanent associate professor position at the Faculty of Physics, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi – UAIC, Romania. He obtained the MSc degree in plasma physics from the same University in 2005 and his cotutelle PhD degree in 2008, physics and chemistry field, from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Romania and Montpellier 2 University, France.
He has significant contributions in the field of plasma sources and applications: comprehensive experimental observations on the physics of plasma jets and subsequent modelling of phenomena or applications in life sciences; contributions towards the understanding of the mechanisms during plasma treatment or deposition at atmospheric pressure and related applications; development of a new method in laboratory astrophysics to deposit carbon dust analogues and related high energy particles processing. Joint research work on these topics were performed with together with research groups from University of Cyprus, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, Shizuoka University, Japan, University of Lille, France and Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering, Romania.
Based on laboratory investigations, he published over 40 papers and delivered more than 20 oral presentations at international conferences on plasma and materials science. He is actively involved in outreach and citizen science activities.
